Speaking well has obvious advantages. It enables conversations, helps make a great first impression, and at its best, satisfies the soul. But speaking this well requires that you pay attention to things other than the spoken word. It requires tuning into the speaker’s mindset, context, emotional state, tone, mood, and more. It requires asking questions like “what do they want to convey?”, “what do they know and don’t know?”, and “how are they feeling right now?”. To bring yourself to awareness and think of others when speaking requires some practice. In fact, it helps to think like a storyteller.

 

The difference between good customer service and great customer service is the quality of attention.
