If I open the Asset screen, with the view set to Inventory - All Assets, a search box appears above the table of assets.
If I change to any other view of the assets (both core and custom), the search box disappears.
I would really like to be able to search within a chosen view.

I've noticed the same issue. It would be very useful to have the search functionality available in all views, not just Inventory - All Assets. This would greatly improve efficiency when managing assets in specific views.
Hope this can be implemented soon!
