Wildcard Searching

For those that haven't figured this out yet, Freshdesk doesn't have an extremely standard function -- wildcard searching.

You can't use *, %, etc to even start looking for anything so unless you know the exact information that you're looking for, too bad! This was raised to their support team, but they said the product team indicated it wasn't important enough to pick up at this time.

I'm posting for any person who feels that it should be possible to search by

  • domain name against email addresses on customers
  • strings where you know the content, but not the entire thing (ex *java* instead of StringHandler.Java.Exception)
  • companies where you remember a part of the name, but not the whole thing
  • people who you know part of their name for, but can't remember all of it
  • subject lines
  • email contents
  • Etcetc

I've used a dozen+ systems (Zendesk, salesforce, servicedesk, servicenow, Zoho, ePiphany, fogbugz etcetc) ... all of them have this basic functionality.

Anyway, this is my request that people upvote :)

Wildcards would be great, but I'd even settle for a search that let you search multiple words by prefix.

Also, the way phone number searches work is ridiculous.

  • Try searching for the beginning of a phone number to get a list of possibles.
  • Pick one of the results from the list and try searching for it exactly as it appeared in the results.
  • Be confused

I need to look for people within certain email domains.

this is an important feature of "search" especially as we support hundreds of tickets where a wildcard search feature would help reduce search times in finding the right ticket.

It seems crazy and very frustrating that this isn't available!

Agree, this is a feature that most competitors to help-desk tools provide out of the box. It's a simple quick way to get around staff who need to quickly find bits of information to string together a quick response to Clients as part of being responsive and accurate in their replies and advice. This should be, in my mind, a strong business use case for a freely available feature. We are after all doing a simple DB query on a database hosted in the cloud. This shouldn't pose a great impact / performance hit on the dedicated servers hosting our help-desk data.

For instance, a direct competitor of Freshdesk provides this feature and explanation of the feature in their support forums.

* The wildcard operator is useful when you want to search various forms of a word. For example, searching for photo* returns results that would include photography, photographer, photograph and any other words that began with 'photo'.

However, because of the performance issues involved with doing wildcard searches, unqualified wildcard searches are not currently supported. In other words, you need to use a property keyword to make your search specific to the data you're trying to locate.

I absolutely agree with this.  I find it very difficult to find tickets atm.  We have thousands of them and need to be able to search for tickets that contain 2 different groups of text…

e.g  need it to search for this text  “user error”  and then also this text… “cannot find product”
