I am having a few contract employees who assist with customer support. They get access to view and export all our customer and contact information, which I want to avoid. But I cannot find a way to secure that from the agents. Isn't there a way to do that?

With the custom roles feature, you can define what the agents can/can't access in the helpdesk. You can setup a custom role for agents for whom you'd like to restrict the contact page access. This feature is available from the Estate plan onwards.
