Hi,

We are using Freshservice Asset Management to build our CMDB, but I’m hitting some barriers with respect to how I link vendors, products and assets. It’s wholly possible that I’m being a bit dense, but I usually figure these things out, and I’m currently hitting a barrier…

I’ll give you and example.

We use a vendor in Ireland for our Broadband services. Let’s call this vendor ACME…

We have a broadband service in both Cork and Dublin - different locations, but the same ‘product’ provided by ACME…

In my head, I should be able to create the vendor, including contact details, attach the contracts etc. and then link this to a Config Item with a relationship - “broadband services is provided by ACME”

At present, it isn’t clear to me how to categorise the broadband service - is it an asset, is it a product, is it a service?

It seems that it doesn’t matter which I choose, I can’t link to the vendor in any way…

I’d really appreciate some insight as to how others have dealt with this. It just feel like it promises a lot, but delivery is clunky…

Thanks in advance...

If you create a product of “Broadband Service” you can link the vendor(s) to the product. Then when you create the asset you select the product and the vendor.  That dictates the initially shown price and warranty period.

To be able to select the product within the asset record you will have to set the type, which to be able to show products and vendors, has to be hardware or a sub item of hardware.

Unfortunately setting the type as Services > IT Service > Internet link, doesn’t give you the options for products and vendors.  The best you could do then would be to add custom fields to the Internet Link asset type to record vendor, purchase date, cost etc, but you would have to complete it manually.

We’ve disabled the default asset types and added them as new hardware subtypes to be able to get the product vendor fields.

The fact you cannot have the “hardware properties” (product, vendor, acquisition date etc.) on any other top level asset type, including custom top level types is rather annoying, as we had hoped to add a new top level of software, given the software module is so lacking.
