Is there a way to change the following categorizations Hardware > Computer > Laptops from editable for all 3 to just Laptops being the only editable option?

Currently there are a plethora of Hardware and Computer entries that the agents or tools can edit/add details to.

Having Hardware & Computer as read only makes a lot more sense.

That way only data at the actual device level will be available for editing and the upper categorizations cannot be influenced directly.

Looking into this so that NIST & CISv8 safeguards can be met and the inventory can be maintained more tightly.

The lack of RBAC within the Inventory module is one of the reasons we do not allow our very distributed team of laptop managers direct access to Freshservice (the other reason being the exorbitant agent license cost for someone whose sole responsibility is keeping track of computers). Not sure what the Device42 acquisition is going to bring, but I suspect we won’t be seeing the native Inventory module getting much love going forward. Instead we export relevant parts of the inventory to SharePoint lists, then have people submit service requests for changing status etc. it’s a bit more manual effort, but then we can additionally make sure e.g. that they provide sanitization logs when declaring an asset disposed.

Thanks for the insight. I do believe at this point Freshservice is many years behind the curve when it comes to most aspects of an operational cmdb. Things have changed quite a bit, but there are many opportunities for improvement. Might be time to innovate with SharePoint and PowerApps moving forward.
